The Dyneema composite fabric on the tarp that I got with my system is incredibly light. It’s also semi-transparent. I can look up through the tarp at night and discern the silhouettes of the trees above and the sky between them. It’s a nice sensation of being halfway between enclosed and in the open. The Dyneema composite tarp is a great option for keeping the elements at bay without feeling totally boxed in.
Temperatures haven’t been cold enough yet for the top quilt, but I like the way the underquilt works on this system compared to my old one. With my old system if I wanted to attach or detach an underquilt it would require me to unzip the integrated bug net and get outside to attach or detach it. With the 360 degree bug net on this system being separate from the hammock I find that I can simply reach over either side of the hammock and pull the underquilt away for cooler sleeping and then reach over again and pull it back underneath me to get warm again without getting up at all. The zipper pulls have large glow-in-the-dark beads that make them easy to find in the dark. Nice touch.
The straps and slings that are provided make it fast and easy to hang the hammock and get the tension adjusted. It was so much easier to get into and so much more comfortable to sleep in that I wished I could have had this hammock all along rather than my old one. I am very happy that I have this system now and really looking forward to my next adventure with the R&R Thru Hiker system.
Used this system my 2019 Appalachian Trail thru hike. It was perfect I was always warm and comfortable never a drop of water on me. And never a sleepless night. Every morning I woke up ready to go the next day. This is truly comfortable down to 20°. The cuben tarp is anyone's best friend it doesnt hold water weight like other tarps so packing it up wet is no issue.
